iPhones from the USA

How to get a great deal on previous iPhone models in the US after an Apple event

06.09.2026

As soon as an Apple Event wraps up and new iPhone models are announced, hundreds of thousands of Americans list their previous flagships for sale. The US has a strong culture of careful device use: the vast majority of people keep their smartphones in sturdy cases with screen protectors, and a one-year ownership cycle simply isn't long enough to wear a device out. If you're not chasing the latest release, this is the perfect moment to pick up an iPhone in near-perfect condition at a low price.

That said, buying a used smartphone requires a clear understanding of the US market, certification programs, and potential pitfalls — we'll walk you through everything and help you get your purchase delivered!

Market trends and expected prices for previous models

The surge of devices hitting the secondary market runs from mid-September through the end of October. Supply sharply outpaces demand, pushing sellers to lower their prices. Here's what typical US resale prices look like in the fall.

  • iPhone 13 / 13 Pro. Base models $280–$330, Pro versions around $380–$440. A great entry point for everyday use.
  • iPhone 14 / 14 Pro. Base models $390–$450, Pro versions with Dynamic Island — $490–$560.
  • iPhone 15 / 15 Pro. Base models drop to $520–$580, the Pro segment with titanium build and USB-C — around $650–$750 depending on storage.
  • iPhone 16 / 16 Pro. Base 16 and 16 Plus — $580–$640, Pro and Pro Max — $720–$820. The sweet spot for getting full Apple Intelligence functionality on A18 chips.
  • iPhone 17 / 17 Pro. Base 17 and 17 Air — $690–$750, Pro and Pro Max with titanium build and advanced cameras — $880–$990. Last year's models move the fastest on launch day, making them the easiest to find as Open Box: unsealed box, 100% battery health, and remaining AppleCare+ coverage.

Private sellers are often 10–15% cheaper than specialized stores, but retailers and major certified programs offer an official warranty and a simpler return process.

What happened to prices on apple.com

Contrary to the usual pattern, this year Apple didn't lower prices on previous models after the event — it raised them. Instead of the standard $100 drop for the previous generation, the company added exactly $100 to the base configurations of every smartphone remaining in its lineup.

  • iPhone 17e. Was $599, now $699 (+$100).
  • iPhone 16. Was $699, now $799 (+$100).
  • iPhone 17. Was $799, now $899 (+$100).
  • iPhone Air. Was $999, now $1,099 (+$100).

The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max have been removed from the site entirely — their place has been taken by the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. Apple attributes the price increases on older models to several factors: a desire to steer buyers toward new releases by making last year's phones less attractive, higher production costs for new processors, expenses related to moving manufacturing from China to India and Vietnam, and the server infrastructure costs required to run AI features.

Only new devices in the official catalog are getting more expensive. On the secondary market, the situation is the opposite: millions of Americans upgrading to the iPhone 18 are listing their previous iPhones for sale. The supply of used and refurbished devices is rising sharply while prices are falling — which is exactly what makes fall a great time to buy.

On apple.com you're of course buying brand-new smartphones. But used options are far from bad!

eBay and Amazon programs: why it's safe

Buying used tech from a random private seller on forums comes with risks. But American marketplaces have built tightly regulated ecosystems with buyer protection, where risk is kept to a minimum.

1. eBay Refurbished

The eBay program divides refurbished and inspected devices into four strict grades:

  • Certified Refurbished: device in flawless condition, packaged in a branded box. Restored by the manufacturer itself or officially approved partners. Comes with a 2-year Allstate warranty.
  • Excellent: cosmetic condition is close to perfect, with micro-scratches invisible at arm's length. Battery has been tested and holds a high charge. Comes with a 1-year Allstate warranty.
  • Very Good: moderate cosmetic wear, minor scuffs on the edges, but 100% fully functional. 1-year warranty.
  • Good: visible scratches or signs of wear on the body, but the glass is chip-free and the screen and all modules work perfectly. 1-year warranty.

The key advantage is the eBay Money Back Guarantee. If the seller sends a phone with a defect not mentioned in the listing, or the battery is more worn than stated, eBay will force a refund — even if the seller marked the listing as No Returns.

2. Amazon Renewed

Amazon doesn't allow random private individuals to sell used devices — only certified service centers that have passed an audit are permitted to sell, so you're even better protected from unpleasant surprises here. Don't forget that all purchased items can be inspected at the Prostobox warehouse. The Amazon Renewed program is divided into tiers:

  • Amazon Renewed Standard: the device passes a diagnostic test covering more than 90 checkpoints, has a remaining battery capacity of at least 80%, and shows minimal signs of use. Covered by the Amazon Renewed Guarantee for 90 days — unconditional refund or replacement.
  • Amazon Renewed Premium: devices with no visible cosmetic defects from 30 cm away, a guaranteed battery capacity of at least 90%, and a full 365-day warranty.

How to buy a used iPhone from private sellers

Buying directly from an American upgrading in September is the best way to get a device in perfect condition for 15–25% less than retail — often with the original box, remaining AppleCare+, and original cases thrown in. To make the deal go smoothly, check every private listing across four key areas.

1. Seller profile

  • Transaction history. The account should be more than 1–2 years old. Ideally, the profile has a history of selling everyday household items (clothing, parts, electronics) — not an empty profile with hundreds of reviews from buying cheap stickers.
  • Reason for selling. Genuine owners usually state the context directly: "Upgraded to a new iPhone, selling my personal daily driver" or "Bought at Apple Store on launch day".
  • Volume. If a private seller has 10 iPhones listed at the same time with no boxes, that's a reseller or pawnshop — not a personal owner.

2. Photos in the listing

  • Background and angles. Avoid listings with studio renders on a perfectly white background. Personal phones are photographed on a kitchen table, carpet, or desk under normal room lighting, from every angle. It should be a photo of the exact phone you're buying. If there isn't one — either message the seller directly to request real photos (if they have a good rating), or skip the listing.
  • About screen. There should be a clear photo showing the model, serial number, and carrier lock status (Carrier Lock: No SIM restrictions).
  • Battery Health screen. A trustworthy seller always includes a screenshot showing the actual remaining battery percentage, or at least mentions it in the description.
  • Parts and Service History section. If the screen, battery, or camera has been replaced, iOS will display a warning (Genuine Apple Part or Unknown Part). If this section doesn't appear in the menu at all, the device has never been opened.

3. Verification via direct messages

If the listing description was sparse, ask the seller direct questions before placing your order. Conversations within the eBay messenger carry legal weight when opening a dispute:

  • Is the device fully paid off, or is there any remaining financing/lease balance with your carrier? (Whether the carrier installment plan is paid off.)
  • Can you confirm that Find My iPhone and iCloud Activation Lock are completely disabled? (Whether iCloud is unlinked.)
  • Has this iPhone ever been repaired or had any parts replaced? (Whether any repairs have been made.)
  • Could you please provide the IMEI number so I can check carrier and blacklist status? (IMEI request for verification.)

If the seller dodges your questions or refuses to provide the IMEI, it's best not to proceed with the purchase.

4. Pitfalls and protection

  • Unpaid installment plan (Financed Status). The trickiest risk with private sellers. If an American stopped making monthly payments on the device, the carrier adds the IMEI to the Blacklist. Check the IMEI you receive through specialized checkers (Sickw, IMEIPro) for the Financed / Outstanding Balance parameter.
  • iCloud Activation Lock. Older users or those who aren't tech-savvy often reset their phone using the buttons without disabling Find My. Insist on confirmation that the device has been fully removed from the device list on icloud.com.
  • No Returns label. Most private sellers have this option enabled. There's no need to worry: if the device arrives with a carrier-related defect or a non-genuine screen, the eBay Money Back Guarantee overrides the seller's refusal and forces a refund.

5. Technical verification criteria

  • Factory Unlocked only. Avoid phones marked as Network Locked or contract variants (Locked to AT&T / T-Mobile / Verizon, Bad ESN). Unlocking a carrier-locked US smartphone is a lengthy, costly process — and often impossible.
  • ESN / IMEI Clean. Ask the seller for a screenshot of the settings or a check via services like Sickw or Swappa. The status must be Clean. Any notation of Financed (carrier loan not paid off) or Reported Lost/Stolen means the radio module will be blocked.
  • No MDM profiles. Corporate devices are often written off a company's books but remain linked to a remote MDM management server. After the first full reset, such a phone will prompt for corporate login credentials.
  • Physical SIM slot. Models up to and including iPhone 13 come with a Nano-SIM, while starting with iPhone 14 all US versions (LL/A) support eSIM only.
  • Battery condition. For everyday use, look for Battery Health of 85% or above. A Battery Service notice or an unbranded replacement showing an error in iOS indicates a non-original battery swap.

Safe Purchase Checklist

Four steps that separate a great deal from losing your money.

  1. Check the seller's profile. Look for a rating of 98.5% or higher and at least a couple hundred reviews over the past 12 months. If you can see it's a regular private seller and the deal looks attractive, order an inspection at the Prostobox warehouse to protect yourself from unpleasant surprises.
  2. Request real photos. Avoid listings that only show Apple stock renders. Actual photos should clearly show the corners of the body, the camera module, and the screen turned on at Settings → General → About.
  3. Pay only through the platform. Use PayPal or a bank card within the eBay or Amazon interface, or place a buyout through an operator. Any offer to move to WhatsApp or pay via Zelle, CashApp, or crypto is a scam.
  4. Warehouse inspection. Order a functionality check, detailed photos, and an HD unboxing video at our US warehouse. This way you'll see the real condition of the device before it ships — and if the wrong color arrives, the screen is cracked, or the device is locked, filing a return with the seller while the parcel is still in the US is far easier.

How to inspect your iPhone at the warehouse before shipping

When a parcel from eBay or Amazon arrives at the Prostobox warehouse in the US, the device is inspected before it ships to Russia, Belarus, or Kazakhstan. The warehouse powers on and checks the device, takes detailed photos, and records an HD unboxing video — you'll see the actual condition, what's in the box, and any damage, and if there's an issue you'll have time to open a dispute with the seller while the parcel is still in the country. Services can be ordered in your account dashboard for an incoming parcel:

  • Functionality check — $10 per item. The device will be powered on and verified to be working.
  • 3 photos of contents — $5, 10 photos of contents — $8. Exterior of the body, screen, and all sides.
  • HD unboxing video (1 minute) — $7. Unboxing and on-camera inspection of the device.
  • Photo of parcel on scales — $2, photo of address label — $1.
