Carrie is Stephen King's first published novel. The author was working as a school teacher when he began writing the story of a high school girl with telekinesis, but he threw the draft in the trash. His wife Tabitha pulled it out and persuaded him to keep going. The book came out in 1974, launched the career of the "King of Horror" and became one of his most adapted works.
Plot
Carrie White is a girl tormented by her classmates who grows up with a fanatically religious mother. She discovers she has telekinetic powers. A cruel prank at the prom becomes the point after which catastrophe awaits the quiet town.
Form
The novel is written in an epistolary style: the story is pieced together from newspaper articles, letters, commission reports and witness testimonies. This technique creates the effect of a documentary investigation into the tragedy and heightens the sense that the ending is inevitable.
Carrie adaptations: from De Palma to Flanagan
