Skinny is back: sales of form-fitting clothing are on the rise

After several years of oversized dominance, shoppers are increasingly gravitating toward pieces that offer a more defined fit and a polished, put-together look. The data was compiled by a major Russian retailer based on sales figures.
Marketplace analysts compared fashion category sales against the results from January–June of the previous year and recorded a notable rise in interest in skinny styles and fitted clothing. The trend spans both women's and men's assortments.

Orders for slim skinny jeans grew 2.5x over the year. Athletic bodysuits showed virtually the same momentum, also growing 2.5x. Vests were up nearly 50%.
Sales of fitted shirts and vests grew by around 80%, while crop tops were up 60%. Structured jackets and blazers with a focus on silhouette became nearly 1.5 times more popular, and pencil skirts saw growth of approximately 40%.
The shift was even more pronounced in core basics. Leggings were bought twice as often, and demand for fitted long-sleeve tops more than doubled. Form-fitting T-shirt sales grew by about 80%, flared jeans by roughly 50%. Turtlenecks also strengthened their position, with interest up by more than a third.
Slim belts — great for accentuating the waist and tying an outfit together — were ordered 1.6x more often. That said, this doesn't necessarily mean oversized is out: fitted pieces are increasingly being mixed with loose blazers, wide-leg trousers, and voluminous outerwear.
Market data shows that after a long love affair with maximally relaxed silhouettes, shoppers are once again experimenting with proportions. Skinny fits, defined waists, and sharper geometry are making a comeback — not as a carbon copy of past-decade fashion, but as a tool for building contrast-driven looks.
For fashion retail, this shift could mean growing demand across several aesthetics at once. Relaxed cuts remain popular, but they now have increasingly visible company in the form of body-conscious clothing.
