Sony is raising PlayStation 5 prices — hurry to buy at the old price

PlayStation 5 prices in the US are set to officially rise for the second time this year. We explain what happened and where to buy a PS5 at the old price.

Sony announced, that from April 2 it will raise prices on all PlayStation 5 models due to «a tense situation in the global economy».

This means you have a few days left to buy the console at the current prices.

What US prices will be

Model Now After April 2 Difference
PS5 with disc drive $550 $650 +$100
PS5 Digital Edition $500 $600 +$100
PS5 Pro $750 $850 +$100

PS5 hardware and features

Inside the PlayStation 5 is an AMD processor with 8 Zen 2 cores and graphics delivering 10.28 TFLOPS with 16 GB of fast memory. The 825 GB SSD transfers data at 5.5 GB/s — the reason why the load screens that plagued gamers for years have virtually disappeared. The image supports up to 4K and 120 frames per second, ray tracing, HDR, and Tempest 3D AudioTech.

Pro version

The higher-end model features a GPU with 45% more performance, twice the storage (2 TB), and Wi-Fi 7 support. The key feature — the PSSR neural upscaler: it improves image clarity without noticeable load on the hardware.

Compatibility

Every PS4 game runs without any extra setup. There are no region locks — a disc or digital purchase from any country works on any console.

What owners can expect in 2026

At the end of April, Saros from Housemarque arrives. In the fall — Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac Games. November brings GTA VI from Rockstar: consoles will get the game first, while the PC version will have to wait.

The world’s most scarce console

PS5 launched in November 2020 — and immediately became the most desirable and hardest-to-get device on the market.

Right after launch, PlayStation 5 faced a semiconductor shortage. Sony found itself in line for chips alongside Apple, Microsoft, Samsung, Ford, and Tesla — and there was no way to skip the queue. Console production could not keep up with demand.

Scalpers took advantage immediately. Bots bought every batch within seconds of it appearing on the site. Regular buyers couldn’t even add the item to their cart, while scalpers resold the console for 2–4–6 times the listed price, and the greediest tried to push it up to 10 times higher.

The situation stayed the same for three years, and only by summer 2023 did Sony restore normal supply levels.

Today Sony has sold 92.2 million consoles, and PlayStation Network sees 132 million active users every month. The company has long moved past the crisis — and, apparently, feels confident enough to raise prices for the second time this year, and on every model in the lineup at once. So don’t waste time — buy while the old prices still apply.
